Botswana Makes History with 2,492 – Carat Diamond, the Largest Gem Unearthed in Over a Century

In a groundbreaking discovery that has captured global attention, Botswana has unearthed a colossal 2,492-carat diamond – the largest gem found in over a century and the second-largest ever mined. This monumental find made by Lucara Diamond Corp, at the Karowe Diamond Mine, was unveiled at a viewing ceremony attended by Botswana’s President Mokgweetsi Masisi, making a significant milestone in the history of diamond mining.

A Historic Discovery: The Second-Largest Diamond Ever Mined. The newly discovered diamond, weighing approximately half a kilogram, stands as a testament to Botswana’s rich mineral resources and its critical role in the global diamond industry. This discovery ranks second only to the legendary Cullinan Diamond, a 3,106-carat stone discovered in South Africa in 1905, which was later cut into iconic gems, including those featured in the British Crown Jewels.

President Masisi expressed his awe at the unveiling ceremony, stating, “It is overwhelming. I am lucky to have seen it in my times”. The diamond’s  extraordinary size and quality highlight the continued importance of Botswana as a leading diamond producer and underscore the advancements in mining technology that made this discovery possible.

The Role of Advanced Technology in Diamond Recovery. The recovery of this historic diamond was made possible through the use of cutting-edge Mega Diamond Recovery (MDR) and X-ray transmission (XRT) technology, implemented by Lucara Diamond Corp.in 2017. These technologies are designed to detect and preserve large, high-value diamonds, ensuring that stones of such magnitude are recovery intact.

William Lamb, the president and CEO of Lucara, emphasized the significance of these technological advancements. “The ability to recover such a massive, high-quality stone intact demonstrates the effectiveness of our approach to diamond recovery and our commitment to maximizing value for our shareholders and stakeholders”, Lamb stated. The Karowe Mine has consistently delivered exceptional results, previously yielding the 1,758-carat Sewelo and the 1,109 – carat Lesedi La Rona diamonds, further establishing it as a world-class diamond.

Economic and Social Impact: Diamonds in Botswana. Botswana’s economy is heavily reliant on its diamond industry, which contributes significantly to the country’s GDP and provides substantial employment opportunities. The discovery of the 2,492-carat diamond is expected to have profound economic implications, potentially increasing revenue from diamond exports and attracting further investment into Botswana’s mining sector.

The diamond industry also plays a vital role in the social development of Botswana. Revenues generated from diamond mining are reinvested into national infrastructure, education, and healthcare, helping to improve living standards across the country. This latest discovery reinforces the importance of sustainability and responsible mining practices, ensuring that the benefits of diamond wealth are shared broadly among Botswana’s population.

David Kellie, CEO of the Natural Diamond Council, highlighted the global significance of the diamond industry, noting that it supports the livelihoods of 10 million people worldwide. “The diamond industry not only drives economic growth but also contributes to solving some of the world's most pressing challenges by providing better access to founding and resources”, Kellie remarked.

Shaping the Future: Innovation and Market Trends. The discovery of the 2,492-carat diamond comes at a time of significant transformation in the diamond industry. According to Grant Mobley, a diamond expert with the Natural Diamond Council, the industry is evolving rapidly, driven by innovation and changing consumer preferences. “For decades, the diamond industry operated within a traditional box”, Mobley explained. “Today, however, we’ve completely stepped out of the box, embracing new design approaches and more personalized jewelry offerings”.

This shift towards customization and individuality is attracting a younger, more diverse audience to the diamond market. Jewelers are now experimenting with non – traditional designs, mixing metals, and incorporating multiple gemstones into unique creations. The discovery of such a large diamond presents new opportunities for innovation in luxury jewelry design, whether it is cut into multiple stones or preserved as a singular, iconic gem.

The Journey Ahead: Naming, Valuing, and Utilizing the Diamond. As the diamond industry eagerly anticipates the next steps in the journey of this extraordinary gem, there is much speculation about the 2,492-carat diamond will be named, valued, and ultimately used. While the diamond has yet to be priced, its size and quality suggest that it could command a record-breaking sum at auction.

Experts will carefully consider the diamond’s internal structure to determine the best approach for cutting and polishing it. Whether it is transformed into several high-quality stones or kept intact, the diamond is expected to become a centerpiece in the world of luxury jewelry, symbolizing the pinnacle of natural beauty and rarity.

A Defining Moment in Diamond History. The discovery of the 2,492-carat diamond in Botswana is a defining moment for both the country and the global diamond industry. It underscores Botswana’s pivotal role in the diamond market and highlights the technological innovations that have made such discoveries possible in the modern era.
